Why Small Changes Beat Big Resolutions

Most people know what they should improve.

The challenge isn’t knowing—it’s doing.

When we want better results, our instinct is often to make a dramatic change: overhaul our workflow, become perfectly organized, eliminate every distraction, or completely change how we communicate. The problem? Big changes require a lot of energy, discipline, and willpower all at once. That’s why they rarely last.

Small improvements work differently.

A one percent improvement may seem insignificant today, but repeated consistently, those small gains compound over time. A better meeting agenda. Taking two extra minutes to review work before sending it. Asking one more clarifying question. Blocking 30 minutes for focused work. Following up with a client just a little sooner.

None of these actions are revolutionary. Together, they can dramatically improve productivity, accuracy, client experience, and confidence.

The key is choosing one improvement that is small enough to be sustainable but meaningful enough to make a difference.

In our TEEMS coaching program, we encourage participants to identify one simple improvement each week through the 1% Better Challenge. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s consistent progress. Over time, those incremental improvements become better habits, stronger performance, and greater confidence.

This week, ask yourself one question:

What’s one small change I can make that will make tomorrow just a little better than today?

Start there. Then repeat it next week.

You may be surprised how far a series of small improvements can take you.
